Our Story: As Told by Mama Bunny
One late fall day, a dear college friend of mine asked me to be the doula at the birth of her first baby. I was enormously honored and, frankly, terrified. I had never attended a birth before, but I did have the certification. I agreed and started the process of helping her prepare mentally, emotionally, and materially for the birth. One of my favorite parts of helping her get ready was making her a postpartum support basket. I went to my local thrift store and scored a basket and some nice jars, took it all home, and started filling it with all kinds of things she would need after the baby came. Most notably, I gave her a jar of homemade diaper cream and some body butter. I followed a family recipe my mom had been using for her own doula clients and my sister’s kids for years now. When the time finally came to give my friend her basket, I watched with delight as she examined the various teas, snacks, and baby cosmetics. I loved finding all the elements that would make her transition into motherhood easier, and was so excited for her to use them all when the time came.
When I realized just how much I enjoyed creating the postpartum support basket for my friend, I began to think about how much anyone welcoming a new baby would really love one. I started researching and found that nobody seemed to offer what I had curated for my friend — which seemed like a wasted opportunity for me. At a time in life, preparing to bring home a baby, when EVERYTHING is so new and scary and there’s SO much information out there… making one aspect of it simple and straightforward made perfect sense to me. A basket of goodies geared to help you recover from birth, support milk supply, care for a baby, and a few other gifts and treats to make you smile. I began to wonder if I could start curating and selling these postpartum baskets to moms. And as excited as I was about the idea, it seemed too big of an enterprise for me to handle on my own. Especially with a baby on the way.
A few months later, my son was born. It was an especially stressful time for me, as my husband had left for a military training that would last for three months. I packed up my carefully set up nursery space, put my 10 day old baby in the car, and drove four hours away to stay with my parents until my husband got home. And then my son developed a terrible case of diaper rash; his newborn skin was peeling away, the whole groin area was inflamed and covered with tiny red dots. After about two weeks of trying everything, I decided to go fully crunchy mom mode and gave my son a bath with breastmilk, dried him up very thoroughly, applied some of our homemade body butter, and a thick layer of diaper cream. The next morning the redness had gone down by 50% and the dots were gone. Encouraged, I continued to apply a healthy layer each diaper change and by the end of the third day it was gone. I breathed a sigh of relief; I was still in the newborn trenches, living with my parents, dealing with my husband’s absence, but at LEAST the diaper rash was gone.
And then it hit me; maybe the idea of postpartum baskets was too much for me to do right now. But making and distributing the diaper cream and body butter? That seemed WAY more doable. And then I could steadily add products as time went on until I was creating the postpartum support baskets of my dreams.
So I talked to my husband, who very enthusiastically bought into the idea. We brought in a friend who was a seasoned entrepreneur. I spent hours tweaking the recipe for not only the diaper cream, but also the body butter until they were perfect. For the six months leading up to launch, we spent nearly every spare minute working on the business.
